#TungguSekejap; - ArtXpression Festival 2020
What is it about?
“I have wanted to kill myself, every day, for the last three months. I’m only holding on because I think me killing myself might upset my parents.” The message encapsulated so much of what happens during a depressive episode (1) It is persistent. Someone had wanted to do it for months on end. It was in their mind every day (2) It distorts reality. A person thought that by killing themselves might upset their parents. Even if their parents were abusive monsters of human beings in their own worlds of pain, it is fairly undeniable that yes, they would be upset by finding out that their child that they had loved and raised had taken their own life. (3) A part of us wants to hold on. Some tiny sliver inside of ourselves wants our dark thoughts to be proven wrong… somehow. Suicide is a serious mental and public health issue across the globe, with the Asian continent contributing over half of the results of 800,000 deaths per year. Asia is responsible for up to 60% of all cases. WHO estimates that approximately 1.53 million people or nearly 3% of all world deaths would be due to suicide, and 10–20 times more people would attempt suicide worldwide by 2020. Substance abuse is among the leading risk factors for suicide. People with substance use disorders may experience hopelessness and suicidal thoughts. According to reports published in the Journal of the American Medical Association: Roughly 50 percent of individuals with severe mental disorders are affected by substance abuse. 37 percent of alcohol abusers and 53 percent of drug abusers also have at least one serious mental illness. Of all people diagnosed as mentally ill, 29 percent abuse either alcohol or drugs. Art is healing. Art is connecting. Art as a medium to spread the message. With this, ArtXpression Festival 2020 launched our "#TungguSekejap" campaign. We aim to educate and spread awareness on the importance of mental health and substance abuse literacy to the community. Therefore, through this campaign, we would like to remind every single person that it is always okay to reconsider their decision, rethink their emotion, to talk to someone, to seek help from professionals. To let them know that they are not alone in their journey!
